It's sad to say, but hyenas have gained a bad reputation over the years. Many African cultures think that these creatures are the "Slags of the Earth".
This negative image could date from prehistoric times. Hyenas have been proven to hunt the first humans. This detestable habit, added to their practice of scavenger animals, would have earned them the title of vile creatures. In the West African cultures, hyenas are seen as dirty and immoral animals that are conniving with witches. In parts of Tanzania, when a hyena screams the night of the birth of a little being, it is said that it will turn into a thief by growing up.
In the Middle East, hyenas are seen as the incarnation of jinn corrupted by the world. The Arab writer Al-Doumairy described hyenas as vampires roaming in the night to suck the blood of the brave. This could explain why the idea that hyenas are cowardly has spread. Even Christian and Jewish cultures do not have a high regard for these creatures. A legend The hyenas are said to have never been part of the loading of Noah's famous ark, but they would have been conceived after the great flood and would be the result of the mating of a mad dog with a nasty cat. The constant roar or sneer of the animal is seen as a sign of stupidity.
However, there are some clearer points in the hyena's reputation. The people Tabwa from East Africa and Southwest Tanzania has a history of creation in which spotted hyenas warm the cold earth by creating the sun. In some rural parts of Afghanistan, India and Palestine, despite their nauseating reputation, hyenas are killed and cut up to create love potions for single people.
